Child Support Services
In addition to divorce lawyers offering private legal representation, the state office of the Attorney
General provides child support services for parents who wish to obtain or provide financial support for their children.
Each state cooperates through uniform family law acts in reporting payments, tracing parents, and enforcing
judgments for payments.
Child Support Services
Savings is the primary benefit of using government resources rather than a private divorce lawyer. Each
state's child support service decides which of the following services are necessary:
- Locating a non-custodial parent
- Establishing paternity
- Establishing and enforcing child support orders
- Establishing and enforcing medical support orders
- Reviewing and adjusting child support payments
- Collecting and distributing child support payments
Child Support Services - Incarceration
Many states offer financial assistance to single parents who are not receiving support payments. States collect payments from defaulting parents as reimbursement for these payments. Should the bill remain unpaid,
judges may order incarceration. Also be aware that assistant attorney generals are not representing either
parent, but are protecting the state's interest. For personal representation, contact a private divorce lawyer.
