Most state bar associations offer an optional certificate of specialization, to highly qualified attorneys, who prove their expertise through written examination and the recommendation of members of the bar. No attorney is required to apply for a certificate of specialization, however, qualification as a specialist does provides an increased degree of assurance for clients. State bar associations also provide a public venue to air grievances against member attorneys. The procedure and documents required are available without charge by contacting the state bar.
