Divorce and Kids - Effects
It seems logical older children are equipped to
deal with the loss of a parent. After all, older children are more mature and enjoyed the benefit of two parents
for a longer time. Studies do not support this logic. To the contrary, most major studies of the
effects of divorce on children suggest that greater attachments are formed and lost, while younger children,
with less contact and bonding, more easily accept the loss. Likewise, after separation,
results are mixed on the benefit to a child from periodic visitation. Children often find visitation confusing -
- a tumultuous mix of anxiety, resentment and false hope.

An increasing number of families endure divorce proceedings each year, in total number and as a percentage of
the population. Most of these people must pay or are entitled to receive child support. Almost all people find
the divorce proceeding and child support rights and duties to be tedious. Support groups
and child support chatboards may provide a ready source of sharing common experiences with others similarly
situated. Be aware however, because of
the lack of familiarity with legal nuances, a surface understanding of current laws and child support may cause
harm. There is no better source of legal information about child support
laws and applicable legal standards than a qualified, local, family law lawyer.
