Divorce Attorneys

Selecting legal representation is the single most important decision facing anyone considering divorce. Potential liability and losses from innocent errors can be devastating, yet are easily contained by a talented divorce attorney. In the purest light, the law applies equally to all people. In the most immediate light, creative interpretation of law is the eloquent art of trial lawyers.

Comparing divorce attorney specialization & experience

All state bar associations offer certificates of legal specialization in Family Law. No divorce attorney is required to apply for certification - participation is voluntary. Nevertheless, by qualifying and proving a high degree of legal expertise and experience, clients are assured certified divorce attorneys are well versed in family law matters. Specialization normally includes additional written examinations conducted by the state bar, and positive recommendations of attorneys who opposed the applicant in trial.

Many other divorce attorneys (not certified) voluntarily limit their practice to family law matters. Through years of experience arguing cases to juries, these attorneys may amass outstanding reputations with the local judiciary and family law bar. If you must chose between certified attorneys and divorce attorneys known for excellence, always select proven performance as your guide.

Divorce attorney fees

State laws do not limit minimum fees collected by divorce attorneys. Likewise, no maximum fee applies. State Bar rules however do provide guidelines for review of maximum fees. In general, these rules require full disclosure of all fees before performing legal work. Fees charged must be reasonable for the work performed, considering the degree of complexity and experience required for each task. For instance, $300 per hour would seldom be questioned for a talented attorney arguing a case at trial, but this rate would be highly suspect if charged for making routine copies (a task properly performed by office staff for a much lower fee, if a fee is charged at all). All reputable divorce attorneys provide clients with a written power of attorney that fully explains fees, court costs, and litigation expenses that may apply. (Hint: the best time to negotiate fees is before you decide to retain a specific attorney ).
