Divorce Records - Free Online Information
All cases to terminate marriage must be filed in court. Divorce records are maintained by the clerk of the
court, including pleadings, orders, and the docket for each case. Current case information is normally available
almost immediately, while older cases are removed to archives. To access archived records, clerks may charge an
additional fee for accessing files and providing copies. Online access to records is also commonly available in larger counties
and may require an account with a verified credit card for access.
How to access divorce record
You will need the name, county of residence, and approximate date of the final decree. With this information,
the county custodian of records (clerk of the court) may access divorce records and provide certified copies.
Clerks may also charge a small fee for copies and certifications, with records normally available
either by counter service or mail. Free online access to county websites may offer additional information and services
as well, such as dockets, hearing schedules and appeal information. Online
record downloads may or may not be provided, and almost always require payment of an access fee.
Help with records
Clerks and courthouse personnel are prohibited from providing what may be deemed as legal advice.
Nevertheless, many county employees offer assistance which may be inaccurate, including offering opinions
regarding the non-existence of certain records. Each interested person is responsible for the accuracy of their
divorce record search, and county employees are generally protected by immunity from liability if any person
that may be harmed
by their failure or ommission to provide records.
