Quick Divorce Laws - U.S.
What is a quick divorce? In the United states, the waiting period ranges from 0 to 2 years. Many states
require a 60 day wait after filing the petition before the court will consider dissolution. In Canada a 1 year
waiting period is required, after legal separation, before dissolution will be granted or spouses must prove
either infidelity or cruelty in accordance with a criminal standard. The basis for requiring a delay is the
general legislative policy of promoting stability in marriage, and in turn, promoting a stable family
environment for children. Proponents of waiting periods argue that longer mandatory waiting periods and required
marital counseling lower rates of dissolution.
